Judicial Forum – Dec 15, 2009

The East Austin Leadership Program held the second Travis County Judicial Forum at our Community Center in East Austin Tuesday night. Many citizens are unaware that judges are elected here, so this was a chance to meet the candidates and hear their views first hand.

On Tuesday the judges running for the Civil courts each spoke to why they were the best candidates and answered questions from the audience.  A big thanks to the candidates (in alphabetical order) Daniel Bradford, Cliff Brown, Amy Clark Meachum, Karen Sage, Eric Shepherd, Lupe Sosa, Tim Sulak and Yvonne Williams who were introduced by Southwest Key’s Valerie Joiner, and  moderated by Susana Almanza of PODER .

The event was well attended with local residents and voters from all over Austin who had the opportunity to meet and hear firsthand from the judicial candidates about their experience, legal approach and positions on issues.

Finally, a huge thank you to all of the dedicated East Austin Development Program members who made this event happen including Daniel Llanes, Sherron Williams, Sandra Ramos, Ann Del Llano, Shirley Riley, Lucien Banton, Joe Carr, Debbie Russell, Marva Overton, Juan Padilla and Valerie Joiner.

Judicial Forum – Dec 8

The East Austin Leadership Program hosted the first ever Travis County Judicial Forum at our Community Center in East Austin last night. Many citizens are unaware that judges are elected here, so this was a chance to meet the candidates and hear their views first hand.

Last night the judges running for the Criminal courts each spoke to why they were the best candidates and answered questions from the audience.  A big thanks to the candidates (in alphabetical order) John Lipscombe, Mindy Montford, Karen Sage, Edith Schatelowitz and Olga Seelig, who were introduced by Southwest Key’s Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Nelson, and  “mc’d” by ex-Austin mayor, Gus Garcia.

The event was well attended with local residents and voters from all over Austin and drew such luminaries as Matt Glazer of Burnt Orange Report, Michael King of the Austin Chronicle and David Kobierowski of KOOP Radio’s “A Neighborly Conversation.”

Posted a few photos below, and hope to see you at next weeks Civil Courts forum which will follow the same format and takes place on December 15 at 5:30pm, again at Southwest Key Programs Community Center at 6002 Jain Lane, Austin.

Everyone is welcome, attendance is free and light refreshments and food will be served.  And a huge shout out to all of the dedicated East Austin Development Program members who made this event happen.
