Family Day at ERC Houston

On Saturday June 5, 2010 The Houston ERC Program had it first family day. It was a great success. Eight youth showed up with family members. There were also 3 former students in attendance. We also had 6 Harris County Probation Officers attend. There was face painting and balloons for the kids and good healthy conversation and feedback for the family members. There was a lot positive feedback from the families about the ERC and the services we provide for their youth. Hamburgers and hotdogs were provided for all of our guest and most of the families were able to take as much home as they wanted for other family members that could not make the event. Great time was had by all!

How Southwest Key and Art, Keep Kids Out of Juvenile Justice System

Here at Southwest Key Programs, we use different methods to keep kids out of incarceration. Fox 7 news here in Austin, recently covered our work with Travis County, work that will be continued under a new grant we received from the Texas Bar Foundation. Featured are two instructors and artists we work closely with on many projects, Zell Miller III and Jeffrey Da’Shade Johnson as well as one of the students they helped.

2010 Globeys at East Austin College Prep Academy

The students of East Austin College Preparatory School at Southwest Key Programs recently participated in the first Globeys competition.  Students worked all year to create educational computer programs by using the Globaloria platform, under AMD’s Changing the Game Initiative.

Through this creative initiative, students improve their science, technology, English, and math skills, otherwise referred to as STEM.  At the Globey’s competition, the top 3 programs created by students were chosen by special judges from AMD and the East Austin Community.  Congratulations to all of our students for their hard work and creativity!  Please click here for more photos.

Southwest Key, Gaming, 6th Graders and Globaloria

Globaloria is a college-prep and career-prep course in which students learn to create educational web-games using a social network for learning.

Southwest Key’s East Austin College Prep Academy (EACPA) is the first charter school to integrate Globaloria as a school-wide teaching and learning platform, and is leading the nation in offering this game-making course as core curriculum to all its students starting in the 6th grade.

Here’s a short video about how Southwest Key, and our EACPA are using Globaloria with our CEO Dr. Juan Sanchez and school superintendent Dr. Nellie Cantu.

Inspiration from the Dallas Mavericks

From left to right:  Marcus Shed, Oscar DeLeon, Anita Thomas, Katherine Arredondo, Brandy McCray, Gepetta Coleman, Victoria Hampton

In April our Outreach and Tracking Programs in Dallas went to see the Dallas Mavericks’ final game against the San Antonio Spurs. Our kids were inspired by Dallas Maverick player Caron Butler. Caron was in and out of detention as a youth, and has since turned his life around. Our group was treated like VIP’S including being given free t-shirts.

We were invited to watch the shoot-around where we saw Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker, Jason Terry and we also had the pleasure of meeting Marc Cuban, the owner of the Mavericks. And at the end of the game our group was invited to take a picture on the center court.  Thank you to the Dallas Mavericks for your attention and kindness!

Our youth had a great time watching the game and learning about Caron Butler’s story, as they too are on their way to turning their lives around and becoming successful young adults.
